✨ Expert Tip: Top 3 Porto Hidden Gems

Porto is more than just its baroque churches and famous wine cellars. It’s often the smaller, more discreet details that make a trip truly memorable. Here are my top 3 Porto hidden gems that made our stay unforgettable:

🥉 #3 – Our Airbnb Home Base

Undoubtedly one of the best choices of our stay. Incredibly well located, right in the heart of the city on Rua de Santa Catarina, this apartment offered far more than just a roof over our heads. Upon our arrival, the host spent nearly 30 minutes with us, sharing local restaurant recommendations, favorite neighborhoods like Matosinhos, and insider tips on what not to miss (even though we had done our homework beforehand 😉).

Another plus: convenient access via an elevator, with reinforced security both at street level and at the apartment entrance.

And the cherry on top? A terrace overlooking Porto’s rooftops, facing west. Every evening, we could enjoy an aperitif at sunset, a glass of local wine in hand. A true luxury in the heart of the city — and the reason this Airbnb made it into my Top 3 Porto hidden gems.

🥈 #2 – La gelateria Gli Stefini Porto

Newly opened at the time of our visit in July 2025, Gli Stefini Porto is the brainchild of a Portuguese-trained chef who, inspired by his exchanges with a colleague and Italian friend, decided to launch his own gelateria in Porto.

A little tucked away, off the main tourist trails, we stumbled upon it almost by chance on our way back from exploring the city’s western tip (see Visit Porto: Honest Tips for Discovering the City Beyond the Postcards). And what a find! Clearly one of the true Porto hidden gems.

The chef’s creativity goes far beyond the standard gelateria: his lemon sorbet, made with organic fruit and fresh zest, is simply extraordinary. But it’s his Port wine gelato that truly stands out. Using an original (and secret) technique, he manages to capture the aromatic depth of the wine while achieving a silky texture and refined flavor you won’t find anywhere else.

A dessert that reimagines Port wine without slipping into the tourist cliché — this is a signature worth celebrating. A genuine favorite, Gli Stefini is without a doubt one of the most promising gelaterias in Porto.

🥇 #1 – The Thursday Concerts at Jardim do Morro

At the top of my Porto hidden gems — and already famous for its spectacular sunsets over the Douro and the Dom Luís I Bridge — the Jardim do Morro gave us an even more memorable experience: a free Thursday night concert, surrounded by local families, travelers, and curious passersby.

The atmosphere was simply magical: couples sitting on blankets, groups of friends sharing a bottle of wine, and music rising into the air as Porto lit up in the background.

What makes these evenings even more special is that they’re not generally known to tourists. No posters, no flyers — you only find out about them by word of mouth. In our case, it was our local guide Slimmy (see Visit Porto: Honest Tips for Discovering the City Beyond the Postcards) who told us, after realizing we were looking for experiences off the beaten path.

And this wasn’t a one-off event: every Thursday, the park comes alive with a new free concert. That evening, we had the chance to hear a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band, who delivered a surprisingly high-quality performance for an open-air show. The band’s energy, combined with the park’s convivial vibe, turned it into an absolutely unforgettable moment.

This is exactly the kind of experience guidebooks forget to mention — one that reveals the true personality of a city: vibrant, musical, and profoundly human.

✨ In Summary: Top 3 Porto Hidden Gems

These three Porto hidden gems — a centrally located Airbnb on Rua de Santa Catarina with a sunset terrace, the organic and creative gelateria Gli Stefini, and the Thursday night concerts at Jardim do Morro — won’t be found on the first pages of any guidebook. And that’s exactly what makes them so valuable.

They remind us that travel isn’t just about ticking off the must-sees, but also about being surprised by those more intimate moments, often passed along by word of mouth.

In Porto, these hidden gems gave us an authentic experience, far from tourist clichés. And this is exactly what I aim to share here: real finds, through the lens of a hospitality expert, so your travels can be richer and more meaningful.
